In the past the Korean scientific community was hesitant about working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no any longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to remove content from textbooks that describe evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is just one aspect of how the concept of development has changed.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains the changes in the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environments which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. These changes can over many generations lead to the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with disadvantageous ones. As time passes, this difference in reproduction may result in the creation of entirely new species.

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing, but the concept has had a variety of meanings since it took form in the fields of science and other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species transformed into other species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that species are evolving into other species in an orderly and predictable manner.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process in which living organisms develop traits to improve their chances of surviving or producing offspring. Over time this genetic variation can lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological functions in the same population. This change in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as the increase in muscle mass from diet or exercise cannot be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not passed on to future generations.

Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial even though it has been proven to be accurate by thousands of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They argue that the concept should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur that is believed to be the bird's ancestor.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution explains the origins and evolution of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the pillars of biology, and aids scientists discover how living things operate and grow. Evolution also helps us understand the connections between species. Both forms of creationism deny the scientific theories that natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life started on Earth. They claim that evolution is impossible, because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern science shunned miracles in fear that they would lose their credibility.

Some creationists are able to accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their belief "theistic evolution." It is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." In this theory, God creates the original species, and then allows them to change over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the original species were all created at the same time and that they grew gradually afterward. In general, the creationists oppose teaching evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by numerous professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some scientists and educational institutions are more flexible and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.

The publishers of high-school textbooks announced recently that they will remove the mention of evolution in their textbooks.
