Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Upgrades to items are a frequent and important way to improve the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is usually superior to modernized Common or Magic gear because of their high requirements.

Armor

The upgrade of an armor piece to maximum upgrade level will increase its ability to absorb damage. It's important to remember that this will increase the weight of the armor, so it should be heavier.

There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades available in the game, and they all have different effects. Some upgrades give armor an additional amount of health points while others make it lighter and more powerful. The name of the armor upgrade will indicate the type of upgrade the item can receive, as shown below.

Some of the upgrades are also magic or a mix of technology and magic, which is shown by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal or jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be used in any type of equipment while jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and only works with specific types of trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active when the hero isn't fighting. This lets a hero be more efficient while inactive. It can also compensate for the absence of good slot in the talent tree or team which are usually filled by the hero's optimal stats.

A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best item upgrade-in-Slot) items that you will not replace in the near future, then any items with desirable stats but less important than the iLevel of the item being upgraded. This is especially true if an item upgrader mod has multiple stats you wish to upgrade, as it's often better to upgrade just one important stat than two sub-optimal ones.

In the beginning of the game, players in the jungle are likely to upgrade their trinket to a red, while top and middle players will usually opt for a green or pink ward (depending on the matchup). These choices can impact the hero's ability to manage the map.

In addition to the items mentioned above, players can also find other trinkets in the form of trophies and rewards throughout the game.
