Path of Exile Item Upgrading

In Path of Exile, item upgrading is among the most effective ways to upgrade your gear without relying on massive drops or trade. This article will show you how to upgrade your items.

Upgrades to equipment provide an increase to the item's base stats. This bonus scales with the upgrade component level and rarity.

Components

Upgrade components are the parts that improve your armor and weapons more effective. You can find them by destroying enemies, buying them from karma vendors, or finding them in items-spheres. You can also salvage them from equipment that has the components or through salvage kits of high-end quality, such as Black Lion Salvage Kit and Ascended Salvage Tool. Upgrade components are not destroyed when you remove them from the item.

The main purpose of upgrade components is to enable an item to be upgraded however, they also serve other purposes. They can be used to increase the quality of an upgradeable item level upgrade, or they can be used to enhance the experience gained by upgrading an existing weapon or piece of gear. They can also be made to provide extra bonuses. For instance, a crafted glyph will boost the chance of upgrading its target, and the boost upgrade can enhance the defense or attack attribute of a weapon or armor.

Selecting an upgrade template from the GUI will let you bind it to an item. This will display the upgrade components that the item can be updated. Each component is assigned an experience multiplier. This determines how much experience an item will gain when upgraded using the component.
