It's also prone to getting stuck on socks and shoes and could not navigate through rooms with a lot of people well during our tests. Also, it doesn't have cameras that let it see the corners of a room.

Still, it's very good, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly unfinished home or office. It's also extremely quiet and can be used while you are at work or in school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming that is offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle, however. If you're in need of it, the mopping pad can be changed for an awe-inspiring one in a matter of just a few seconds.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

This robot vacuum and mop combination is sleek and has a circular look that looks more like a regular Roomba model than the boxy units of the rivals. It is one of our most attractive robot vacuums. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It features advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads on its own).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop to score 100% in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop mops.

As with other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, offering an intuitive mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only downside is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This can be a problem in the mornings prior to work or at night when you are trying to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, though it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are similarly capable and more attractive. If you're willing to live with a little more noise and some extra cost, this is a very efficient two-in-one device that should satisfy most people.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features that let you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaner that is similar to Ecovacs the top of the line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically emptys the bin of the vacuum and refills the water tank, and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot utilizes LIDAR and structured lighting to map out floor plans and detect obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its premium competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection, although this wasn't quite foolproof in our testing and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has an maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to accomplish the task. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates how hard the vacuum works and also alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home depending on the amount of dirt they are.

For larger houses, it's worth opting for a model with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean one particular area of your house using the app or voice controls. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, set up the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritise your dirtiest rooms to ensure better performance. The app comes with a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
