Evolution Korea

Until recently the Korean scientific community been hesitant to engage with the creationists in fear that doing so could give the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been battling to remove content from textbooks that describe evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the emergence of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is natural selection, which describes the process by which people with advantages survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantageous characteristics. This differential reproduction can be a catalyst to the creation and evolution of new species.

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has a myriad of meanings as it has taken form in the fields of science and in other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process by which living creatures develop traits to increase their chances of living or producing offspring. The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation was literal and that the universe as well as life on Earth were created only recently.

OECs are not as well-known however they're just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a myth.

Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think about creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their editions. The next step is to eliminate portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research as well as on human evolution.

STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and individual members. Its mission is to cut out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe evolution. The root causes are unclear, but may include religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR has accomplished a lot through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences with an evolutionary perspective that attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.

On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
