Similar to other iRobots that are premium (including the most powerful model) they utilize intelligent mapping to design precise floorplans that avoid obstacles like furniture legs. They also come with carpet boost, a feature that boosts the robot's performance when it sees an abundance of dirt on the carpet in order to get it clean quickly.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored extremely well in our tests of floors with no carpet, and they are particularly adept at cleaning hair from dogs. There are some issues however, which hinder them from being our top choice. For instance, the Q5's navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology, so it's prone to get caught up in shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate tightly packed rooms very efficiently in our tests. It doesn't also have a camera to see around corners.

However, it's a good choice, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly unfinished home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and can work when you're at work or best robot hoover at school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming that is offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping, using disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on for long and don't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 has self-emptying docks, however. If you want to, you can swap the mopping pad to a dry one in seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that can also sweep floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps and fluid navigation make it simple to clean and effective in tackling larger particles such as pet hair. It also features self-emptying dustbins as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, although it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

It's a bit more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, but it has superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically empties into its base, and supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is something we haven't seen before on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

This mop and vacuum combination features a sleek, circular look that looks more like a regular Roomba model than the bulky models from the competition. It's one of our most attractive robot vacuums. iRobot's latest flagship model also is its most advanced and has advanced features like enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum to score a perfect 10 in our testing, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that is fully self-refill and empty its base station, and it boasts industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, with an easy mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The only issue is that it's a noisy unit that could be an issue if you use it in the morning prior to work, or at night when you attempt to sleep.

It's also a bit expensive, but it's not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are similarly capable and more attractive. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's extremely powerful however, it will cost you more and create more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the high-end robot vacuum and mop. It comes with a variety of features that are advanced and will make you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaner that is similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically emptys the bin of the vacuum and fills up the water tank, and washes and drys mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floor plans and detect obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its competitors with premium features. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection, though this wasn't foolproof in our tests and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

Its vacuum cleaner has an maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to complete the task. It also has a feature known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas of the home based on how dirty the areas tend to be.

For bigger homes it's recommended to choose one with spot or zone cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean one specific area of your home by using the app or voice controls. If you have furniture, a stairway mode is also useful. Also the recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum take over exactly where it left off is ideal for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you'd expect from its price tag. It is a great job vacuuming, removing 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using one pad and a reciprocating motion that is more efficient than most of the mop cleaners with robots that we've examined. It's also self-sufficient, with a full-featured application and an auto-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through an initial mapping session that collects data about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or to set up an automatic spot-clean. It can also be used to it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance. The app comes with a variety of features, including seasonal suggestions, customized mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.

It can also reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It also has a powerful 8000 Pascal suction and intelligent combs for hair of pets. You can also create a spot-clean that intensely cleans a localized area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and more affordable alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras appear like cute eyes. It's good at vacuuming, but it is more susceptible to getting caught on low thresholds and is a bit noisier than the other top robotic vacuums we've tested. It also has a less intuitive app and a small base station that doesn't double as a bin for emptying.
