World of Warcraft - item upgrading (Info)

Item upgrading allows players to boost the gear score of an item up to 700 and also add an additional perk. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory and heading to the kiln.

Certain items can be upgraded to benefit from their unique stats (like an ideally made breakpoint armour that can be rolled to use in melee PvP) and others, like weapons, do not vary greatly post upgrade, so they aren't worth upgrading.

Weapons

Upgrades to weapons can boost their numerical stats, like attack damage, crit chance and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons also have an unchanging bonus that increases the damage they deal per second. A lot of weapons also have a fixed bonus that is activated when three or more identical weapons are equipped in a single unit. In some instances, this bonus can add up to more than the amount of damage that a weapon can sustain on its own.

The cost of upgrading a weapon is based on the rarity of the weapon and its current level. For instance the weapon with a +2 rating will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while an upgrade of +3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade a weapon will continue increase until it requires the higher level of Smithing Stones, at which the amount will be reset to one.

Upgraded weapons can also alter their base stats. This is usually a good aspect, but it may also have negative effects. In the case of items that are only used in a specific build (Whistant's shield for FB sorcs for instance) upgrading them could make them unusable unless you happen to have an extremely fortunate roll.

Items of armor can also be upgraded to improve their stats. For instance, if you have chests or helms it will boost its defense base while gloves and belts increase their strength and dexterity. Armor also has a reroll option for its Enhanced Defense percent, which means that it may reroll to a lower value.

The upgrade template of a weapon will show the new stats that it will gain upon upgrading, along with the values of these stats. This means that an upgrade from a sword that has 8 damage to an 11-attack-damage sword will result in a weapon receiving an attack damage of 3. However, the 3% doesn't mean that it will strike for 3 times less often as it is an absolute statistic.

A weapon can also be rerolled using the green button that has circular arrows within the item menu. This will roll an item and alter its stats but not reset the weapon's levels, or bind it to account status.

Armor
