WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by +3. Each upgrade also boosts an unspecified substat.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the requirement to roll for a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader enables players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be made on any kind of armor or weapons. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in every major city, and can be accessed at any time to upgrade your equipment. To keep your gear up-to-date it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every several weeks.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the item level, however, they are always less expensive than purchasing new gear. For example upgrading a Benthic chest to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points while purchasing the same item from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, armor, tool, and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players through item upgrader NPCs in exchange for different currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any tool, weapon or armor. The button will display the item's next level of upgrade, when there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the item and current item level as well as the level of the weapon, which is more than gloves or bracers for instance. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Some upgrades give discounts on Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Many locations offer item upgraders, including the main Island and a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and a possibility of obtaining the latest recipe. The discount for upgrades increases depending on the amount of items being upgraded, and can be increased by requiring players to complete specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades are acquired via a variety of means that are both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3, a number of new features have been added to the upgrade system. After an upgrade has been completed to a certain item level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level, will cost less. This applies even if the items are from another set of gear.

The discount is available to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed to upgrade is reduced as well, but is only available after certain milestones have been reached.

Crests

When it comes to upgrading equipment in WoW, players have a variety of choices. Flightstones are an item upgrader Kit that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specific and are utilized during specific item upgrader kit level upgrades. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1 and are available in four ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests are only able to be used on equipment of a particular rank, and every rank has different requirements for its upgrade path. The simplest and most straightforward upgrade process costs just 15 crests while the more complex one requires as many as 20 crests, based on the type of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through completing content at the appropriate level. This could be by engaging in outdoor activities or doing dungeons or raids in all difficulty levels to obtain equipment of lower tier or Mythicbosses for raids, or dungeons with a heroic difficulty for gear in the endgame. The crests can then be exchanged with an upgrader for the item upgrade such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and paths.

The use of these currencies isn't too complicated, but the system will introduce a few changes to the overall upgrade process. For instance, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is designed to allow players to upgrade their gear up to the highest level possible on all their characters, rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

It's also crucial to choose crests in a wise manner, as they have only one purpose. For instance it's best to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment available, and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you plan on making. This is especially relevant for rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character, that will be able to avail the account-wide discount if all of the slots are full of high-quality equipment.
