How to Unlock your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs offer more functionality and are more convenient as compared to manual keys. However, they do require batteries that eventually wear out and will require replacement. Fortunately, there are simple steps that you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. Find a clean area to work on. Place all the tools you'll need. Then, locate the battery's hatch and turn it open using an open-ended flathead, coin, or any other similar tool. Then, carefully remove the battery by lifting the side closest to the hook for the key-ring. Be sure to use rubber gloves to protect the contacts or the clips.

After the battery is removed, place the new one in its socket. Make sure the positive side of the battery is facing upwards, and that all clips are secured. Then slide the cover back towards the key-ring loop until it loosens and slips off. Then, you can remove the cover to reveal the key blade inside. This can be used to unlock your vehicle from the driver's side if you have lost or damaged your key fob.

How to Start Your Vehicle

How to replace the battery

Find the small hole that houses the backup/emergency metal ignition key. Insert the blade of your screwdriver or pry bar tool into this slot and gently pry open the rear of the fob for the key. Once the fob is opened you can locate the CR2032 3V battery and remove it. Replace the battery and snap the fob.

Note: Some older Volvos use a different type of battery that is called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have the thickness of 7/10ths one millimeter less than CR2032 So you'll need be extremely cautious when replacing your battery.
