The second check is a knocking or banging sound, sometimes called water hammer, that happens specifically at the moment the fill valve shuts off rather than during the fill itself. This is far more often a mains pressure issue than a valve fault, caused by the sudden stop of a fast-moving column of water hitting the closed valve and sending a shock through the pipework. A fill valve replacement on its own will sometimes quieten this slightly, particularly if swapping to a bottom-entry valve which fills more gently, but it will not fully resolve a genuine water hammer problem, which usually needs an air-filled arrestor fitted at the supply if it persists.

Top-fix hinges solve exactly that access problem by using a bolt and a quick-release or turn-to-tighten fixing that can be adjusted entirely from above the pan, with no need to get underneath at all. This has made top-fix the standard choice on most new soft-close seats sold in the last several years, Plumb2U next-day despatch and it is usually the easier option to specify when the underside of the pan is difficult to reach or when the original fixing has seized.

Locating the access plate is the first practical step, and it is not always where it looks like it should be. Some concealed frames put the service access behind the flush plate itself, which simply hinges or unclips forward once the buttons are removed, while others use a separate panel elsewhere on the same wall or in an adjoining space such as an airing cupboard. Getting this wrong before checking the frame manufacturer's layout wastes time working into a wall that did not need opening.

A bottom-entry fill valve, by contrast, takes its supply vertically through the base of the cistern, in line with where a rising main or supply pipe comes straight up from the floor void or from beneath a low-level suite. This arrangement is generally quieter, since the incoming water enters below the surface of the tank rather than splashing in from the side, which is why many modern and replacement fill valves are built as bottom-entry as standard, often with a side-entry option built into the same body.

Get the wrong flush valve on a low-level system and the flush pipe will not seat properly, leading to leaks at the joint that only show up once the cistern has been refitted and the access panel closed up again. Get a close-coupled flush valve into a low-level tank and the outlet is simply too short to reach the flush pipe collar at all.
