Patients must be advised that use of AMBIEN late in the third trimester can create respiratory depression and cause sleepiness in infants. Advise patients to avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medication, such as street or prescription drugs prior to and following treatment with AMBIEN.

Dosage

Inform patients that AMBIEN could affect the psychomotor function of the following day. It should not be taken with the less than full amount of rest (7 up to 8 hours); in combination with other CNS depressants (e.g. and sedative/hypnotics opioids), alcohol, or other medications that can increase the metabolism of zolpidem; as well as in debilitated and elderly patients [see WARNINGS and PRECAUTIONSWarnings and Precautions. There have been instances of elderly people falling in the course of taking 10-mg doses tartrate zolpidem. Ambien may cause patients to slide down. They should be advised to get off of their bed once they have taken AMBIEN.

Instruct pregnant women to avoid breastfeeding and that AMBIEN may be absorbed into breast milk. Check infants for excessive hypertonia, sedation, somnolence, or respiratory depression.

AMBIEN is known to cause severe hepatic problems in patients with significant liver impairment. The combination of zolpidem and other medications that alter GABA receptors such as benzodiazepines or anticholinergics, can increase the likelihood of developing this reaction [see the DRUG INTERACTIONS section below]. Inform patients that prolonged use of AMBIEN can lead to tolerance and dependency. Retire treatment as soon clinically possible.

The side effects

The most common symptoms of AMBIEN are headache, dizziness, drowsiness as well as stomach discomfort. The effects that AMBIEN can cause are mild, and usually go away by themselves within few days.

Take care when driving, or taking part in other activities that require alertness when taking AMBIEN, especially if it is taken with less than a full night's rest (7 to 8 hours); with alcohol; or with other medicines that have an effect on the CNS (e.g. and various antidepressants or sedatives). Studies of the effects of AMBIEN on different stages of sleep, it has demonstrated to extend the time spent at the most deep (stage 4) and REM (paradoxical) stages of sleep.

AMBIEN is known to cause impaired psychomotor performance the next day if taken just 8 to 10 hours before going to bed. It can also cause psychomotor impairment if taken in conjunction when combined with alcohol or other medicines which increase blood levels Zolpidem. (See the warnings and precautions). Inform patients that AMBIEN should only be taken in the evening and not taken in the morning.

The precautions

There are many online pharmacies that claim to provide privacy, convenience and price savings through selling medications without a doctor's prescription. Yet, not all are legally operating. Certain sellers sell fake, expired drugs, or even dangerous ones. FDA warns consumers to stay away from online pharmacies which aren't licensed. Be sure to inform patients not to take AMBIEN in excess of what is prescribed. It is not recommended to take AMBIEN when taking the alcohol or any other medication that can result in sleepiness. When taking AMBIEN, patients should wait at least 7-8 hours to travel or take part with any other type of activity that requires full alertness.

If you are breastfeeding your infant take note of any high levels of levels of sedation (more than the normal) breathing difficulties as well as limpness. See Use with Specific Populations]. Studies of older people (>70 years) AMBIEN Cmax and T1/2 value were higher than younger adults.

Alerts

Online pharmacies that are not licensed may offer imitation medicines, or those that have dangerous substances. It is important to instruct patients to follow dosing instructions carefully, and inform them that AMBIEN may result in sleep-related behaviors that are complex, including driving, walking making and eating food, calling or having sexual relations without being fully awake. It can result in serious injuries or death. Discontinue AMBIEN and encourage patients to get medical attention immediately in the event of these symptoms [see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS].

Patients with hepatic insufficiency do not clear zolpidem tartrate at the same rate as patients who have normal liver function, and the use of AMBIEN in conjunction with other medicines that impact the GABA receptors may increase the risk in CNS depression (see the DRUG INTERACTIONS). If a woman becomes pregnant while using AMBIEN need to inform their healthcare providers.
