Regional journalism in NSW will be boosted by a $9 million funding pledge if Labor wins the state election.
The commitment, which is triple a recent promise made by the coalition, will provide certainty to papers publishing news in the bush, NSW Labor says.
The funding signalled the important role journalists played in regional communities, Labor's spokesperson for regional NSW Mick Veitch said on Thursday.
"While the Nationals tout having a regional advertising fund, the fact is our local papers are not getting their fair share," Mr Veitch said.
"This policy will ensure they do."
NSW Labor says it will spend $3 million buying print Buy google ads Account - vccseller.com in regional papers, after NSW media advocates urged the government to purchase ads to support print titles.
The party will also double a $3 million pledge made by the government earlier this month to strengthen community titles, through its Regional Media Fund, if it wins the election on March 25.
The grants of between $20,000 and $60,000 would help regional publishers continue to serve their communities and grow into new digital mediums, the government said.
Labor said it would match this and fund a second round later this year.
This extension would help those who missed out on earlier funding rounds and provide a buffer for more news rooms as they broadened into more digital content, the party says.
The government and Labor's plans were welcomed by Country Press NSW president Lucie Peart.
"We are grateful that Mr Minns, and his team, are engaging in an ongoing dialogue with independent news publishers in NSW," Ms Peart said.
"We also welcome the commitment of the current Regional Media Fund and Labor's plan to extend that fund for a second year."
