Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can be a great source of damage, more AD or even more affixes.

Sometimes, however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade equipment due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be applied to weapons and armor items. They increase the effectiveness of the item upgrader that they are attached to. Upgrades to armor are available in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged using a professional or higher salvage kits to salvage upgrade components from items.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it will take on. The damage absorption of an armor piece will increase when it is upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. However, it's important to keep in mind that this will increase its weight, which will cause it to weigh more than it was before.

There are several different types of armor upgrades that are available in the game. Each one has a distinct impact. Certain upgrades grant armor a greater number of health points, while others make it lighter and more powerful. The quality of a gem can be improved upon by the Jeweler, in stages that vary from Crude to Royal. Based on the level of the gem it can provide different stat boosts when inserted into weapons, gear and jewelry.

All levels of jewels can be crafted at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary gems that require you to be at a sufficient level to be able to get the privilege of having them. In contrast to other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped out with a identical jewel without destroying it. However it is only possible to replace one jewel in an item of equipment once.

It is common to use more jewelry for aesthetic reasons. Jewels also enhance performance and create a harder surface than steel so that repeated friction from pivots does not damage them.

In addition to the above upgrades, the player can also obtain glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs provide a small boost and can be swapped, but they are not guaranteed to show up as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold, and also scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be taken out and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits or aegis cannot be swapped, and can only be found through an upgrade extractor or salvaging with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to give your character a variety of small, but valuable benefits. They are available in the starter area as loot or as personal story rewards. They are also available through vendors and after completing road interaction. They can also be made by jewelers and later found or purchased on the Trading Post.

The first trinkets a player is able to unlock is the cloak. It grants a small but useful bonus to movement speed and the ability to escape. Then, they can get amulets, rings, and necklaces in a similar way to how a player can acquire weapons and armor. Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade slot that accepts either a universal upgrade or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be utilized on any piece of equipment. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced and are only compatible with certain trinkets.
