Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of numerous items in Path of Exile. They can also provide additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Sometimes, however upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade gear because of their requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They improve the performance of the item they are connected to. There are several types of armor upgrades that are available in the game and they all have distinct effects. The type of armor upgrade that an item can get will be identified by the name of the upgrade as indicated in the table below.

The player should be aware that upgrading a piece to its max upgrade level will boost its defense. However, it will also affect the speed and agility of the piece. It is not recommended to upgrade armor past +9. The boost in defense usually isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players the ability to improve certain aspects of their weapon. For instance, an upgrade may enhance the damage caused by a shotgun's shells or the accuracy of the rifle that snipes. Certain weapons come with special upgrades to improve their inherent characteristics. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped out by a different jewel of the same type without damaging it. You are able to replace the jewel only once in a piece of equipment.

Using more jewels in a move will make it more smooth and is usually used for aesthetic reasons. The jewels also improve performance and create a surface harder than steel, so that the repeated friction from pivots do not damage them.
