How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working

If your key fob does not work then you can fix it with just a few steps. First, check to make sure it's not the backup remote.

If the backup is able to lock and unlock your car doors then there is likely an issue with the main remote. The most common causes for key problems with your car keys repair remote are battery or circuitry issues.

Battery

It is not uncommon for the battery inside a key fob for cars to get worn out. It is easy to replace batteries. However it is crucial that you choose the right type. You can check your owner's manual or call the manufacturer to find out the correct type. It is also important to examine the battery compartment, since dead batteries can leak toxic chemicals that could damage the remote. If replacing the batteries doesn't solve the problem it could be because there are other issues that require professional attention. For example, if buttons appear stuck or broken it could be necessary to disassemble the remote and rework its components. You can also try reprogramming your vehicle to recognize the new key fob.

Buttons

Through repeated use, key fobs may become worn and dirty. It is not common to have buttons stop working, or to require a hard press to make them work. This can be very frustrating particularly if you're out of town and need to start your car. Fortunately, even worn out or malfunctioning buttons can often be fixed with just a bit of time and a few items you might already have in the house.

First, check that the batteries are up correctly and that the indentation on the back of the button is filled. Take the remote key repair apart and look over the circuit board. Check for indications of rust or other signs the buttons have been damaged or worn. For instance the paint that conducts electricity could be missing. Then, using a Q-tip that has been dipped in alcohol, gently clean any membrane contacts that are damaged or have conductive paint missing. Don't rub too hard in order to damage the conductive paint, and block the button from firing when pressed.

Examine the battery connector's terminals for loose solder connections. If this is the case, soldering them back in place may restore function to the button. The same method can be used to restore function to any other loose connections inside the fob.

If, for instance, any of the buttons made of rubber on the front of the key fob have stopped working or require a very hard press to work, it is likely that the graphite disks on the back of the button are wearing down and require replacement. This is usually done by rubbing a pencil across the disks, which will bring the button back to life.

If none of this is useful or if the button still doesn't respond to a hard press, then it may be that the circuit board has gone bad. It is possible to fix this with a quick clean and refitting, but it's recommended to have an additional fob in case this method doesn't work for you.

Circuitry

The circuit board of the remote control could be dirty, regardless of whether the buttons on the key fob are working or not. This problem can be resolved by a thorough inspection. The most common causes for dirty circuit boards is water and broken cases. A damaged case can allow water and other debris to pass through and short circuit the electronic components. Water can also get through pins and vias, which are small connectors that are found on the board.

If you're handy enough to open up your key fob and don't mind making a mess, we can take off the buttons and solder new ones in their place. It's also worth looking at the battery terminal connections. If they are loose, the buttons may not function properly or become stuck in their down position. Soldering the terminals, and putting the button back in their place is generally all that's needed to return a non-working key fob to functioning condition.

Non-Remote transponder chips

Sealed non-remote transponder chips are more durable than remote key repairs fobs they are contained in, but they can still be damaged by a hole that is drilled into them or run over by a lawnmowers blade or car door handle. The majority of non-remote transponder chip malfunctions can be blamed on an exploded fuse.

If you're not comfortable opening the key fob, you may remove the circuitboard and utilize a multimeter to check that the diode is functioning properly. If you're not sure with this, go to your local Oreilly or hardware store and utilize their RF frequency tester. This will inform you whether the key fob transmits an RF signal.

Programming

Key fobs endure lots of abuse and aren't impervious to damage. They can lose their pairing to the receiver in your repair car key fob due to shock or low battery, which calls for the reprogramming. A professional auto locksmith or main dealer can reprogram your keyfob and get it up and running again. In the rarer case that resetting or repairing your key fob fails, it could be time to replace it completely.
